Dear AFSCME Local 696 Brothers and Sisters,
As we move into the fall and winter season, AFSCME Local 696 would like to remind all members of the importance of caring for one another, supporting our communities, and extending a helping hand whenever possible.
The labor movement was built on solidarity. That solidarity does not end when we leave the job site. It extends to our families, neighbors, retirees, and fellow members who may be facing difficult times.
1. Support Families in Need
Many families throughout our communities continue to face financial hardships, food insecurity, housing challenges, and other personal struggles, especially during the colder months. We encourage every member to remain mindful of those around them.
Whether it is donating food, helping a neighbor, assisting a family in need, or simply checking in on someone going through a tough time, every act of kindness makes a difference. No contribution is too small, and no gesture of support goes unnoticed.
2. Honor and Protect Our Elders
Our elders have sacrificed and worked to build the communities and opportunities we enjoy today. As winter approaches, many seniors face isolation, transportation difficulties, and health-related challenges.
Please take a moment to:
-
Check on elderly relatives and neighbors
-
Assist with errands or household tasks
-
Help with grocery shopping or essential needs
-
Offer companionship through a phone call or visit
A few minutes of your time could brighten someone’s entire day.
3. Mental Health Matters
Mental health challenges continue to impact families across our communities. Stress, depression, anxiety, and feelings of isolation can affect anyone regardless of age, occupation, or background.
As union members, we must continue to support one another without judgment and encourage those struggling to seek assistance when needed.
Remember
Seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness.
Let’s continue to create an environment where people feel safe discussing mental health concerns and know they are not alone.
4. Addressing the Substance Abuse Crisis
Substance abuse continues to impact families, workplaces, and communities at alarming rates. Too many lives have been affected by addiction and its consequences.
AFSCME Local 696 encourages members to:
-
Look out for family, friends, and coworkers who may be struggling.
-
Offer support and compassion rather than judgment.
-
Encourage treatment and recovery resources.
-
Speak up when someone may need help.
Together, we can save lives and strengthen our communities.
United We Stand
The true strength of AFSCME Local 696 is found in our commitment to one another. During this fall and winter season, let us demonstrate the values that define our union:
-
Solidarity
-
Compassion
-
Service
-

When we support one another, we build stronger families, safer communities, and a stronger union.
Have a Safe, Healthy, and Blessed Fall & Winter Season!
Let’s continue to look out for our brothers, sisters, neighbors, seniors, and those in need. Together, we can make a positive difference in someone’s life.
